Expedition in Path of Exile 2 doesn't feel like the same old side activity anymore. With the 0.5.0 Return of the Ancients update, a Logbook isn't just a quick blast-and-loot map. Getting access takes a bit of work
You can't just roll a fresh character and head straight for the coast. The game makes you earn it. First, you need to clear the Runes of Aldur intro quests. Then you've got to move the Farrow storyline along after reaching Ruined Kingsmarch. Once Gwennen is found, the system properly opens up. From there, the loop is easy to understand, even if it can punish lazy play. Use a Logbook, generate a new sea sector, pick a route, and start hopping between islands. Push deeper and the rune modifiers get nastier. More damage. More speed. More nonsense on the ground. Of course, that's also where the better rewards tend to sit.
Islands now matter more than ever
The island types are what stop the system from turning into another straight grind. Standard Expedition islands still give you that familiar rhythm: place explosives, crack open buried rewards, and deal with whatever crawls out. Volcanic islands are a different story. They're packed with unstable sulphite, and players are absolutely going to get greedy with it. Blow up too much and you'll call in heavy enemy waves. Sometimes you'll also uncover the Sulphite Ogre, tucked away behind breakable walls. Let him soak up enough sulphite and the fight gets ugly fast. Still, people will run it because the drops can be worth the repair bill and the swearing.
Boss routes change the chase
The deeper ocean islands are where the update starts feeling like its own endgame board. Medved is one of the names players will be hunting early because he can drop directional Logbooks, which help you aim for the kind of content you actually want instead of praying to the map generator. Uhtred, the Stardrinker, is a bigger wall. He's not the sort of boss you face half-asleep with a podcast on. Beating him matters, though, because he's tied to Verisium meteor events. Those events are already looking like one of the main reasons serious farmers will keep coming back to the sea.
Crafting pressure is going up
All of this feeds straight into the new crafting economy. Verisium, advanced alloys, rune shards, and the huge batch of new runes give players a lot more to chase than raw currency alone. The chrono and elemental rune options should open up some odd builds too, especially alongside skills like Triskelion Cascade and Frostflame Nova.
